Next Level Portraits: Foundations of Lighting with Jeff Carpenter

Wed, Apr 15, 7–8:30pm ET Live Online

This seminar is for CreativeLive subscribers only. Not subscribed? Start here!Lighting is often taught through diagrams and formulas, but understanding light comes from knowing how a few core principles work together. In this class, portrait photographer and educator Jeff Carpenter focuses on three foundational elements of lighting that shape every portrait: direction, distance, and shape. In Next Level Portraits: Foundations of Lighting, you’ll learn how the position of a light affects facial structure and texture, how distance controls contrast and exposure, and how light patterns influence the overall look and mood of a portrait. Jeff breaks down these concepts in a clear, practical way, including a simple explanation of the inverse square law that helps photographers understand why small changes in distance can dramatically change an image. This class is taught from a studio environment and emphasizes lighting techniques that are controlled, repeatable, and adaptable. While the demonstrations take place in the studio, the principles taught apply to any portrait scenario and any lighting equipment (even natural light). This course is the foundation of the Next Level Portraits series and is designed for photographers who want to better understand how light works so they can make intentional decisions rather than relying on guesswork or memorized setups. By understanding these foundational lighting principles, photographers can spend less time worrying about technical settings and more time collaborating with their subjects and focusing on creativity. This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with Jeff Carpenter. Note: This class is the first course in the Next Level Portraits series. It establishes the core lighting principles that will be applied in future classes focused on all different facets of portrait photography. What You'll Learn Understand how light direction shapes the face and affects texture and mood Use distance to control contrast and exposure Apply the inverse square law in a simple, practical way Recognize and use common portrait lighting patterns Shape light to flatter different subjects and portrait styles Build studio lighting setups that are consistent and repeatable Make confident lighting decisions without relying on formulas or diagrams Who It's For Portrait and headshot photographers who want a deeper understanding of lighting Photographers who feel comfortable with exposure but struggle with lighting decisions Creatives working primarily in studio environments Photographers who want lighting fundamentals that apply across styles and gear A basic understanding of camera exposure is recommended. Pacing and Emotional Timing in Video Editing with Michael Venzor

Fri, May 8, 7–8:30pm ET Live Online

This seminar is for CreativeLive subscribers only. Not subscribed? Start here! The Pacing and Emotional Timing in Video Editing seminar focuses on how editors shape emotion not just through how they cut, but when they cut. Pacing is one of the most powerful storytelling tools an editor has. It determines tension, release, comedy, drama, and how long an audience stays emotionally connected to a scene. In this seminar, you’ll learn how timing choices influence how a scene feels, and why technically “correct” edits can still fall emotionally flat.Through practical examples and scene breakdowns, this seminar explores how pacing changes based on story intent, performance, genre, and audience expectation. Topics include letting moments breathe, tightening for momentum, using pauses intentionally, and recognizing when emotional timing matters more than visual continuity. By the end of the session, attendees will have a stronger instinct for shaping rhythm and emotion through editorial timing. The class is designed for beginner to intermediate editors and can be followed in any NLE, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, or similar editing software. This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with Michael Venzor. What You'll Learn Understand how pacing shapes tension, release, comedy, drama, urgency, and emotional weight. Recognize how cut length changes perception, including when short cuts increase energy and when longer cuts build realism or tension. Make emotional timing decisions by focusing on emotional beats rather than just visual beats. Use pauses, silence, and reaction shots intentionally to support performance and emotional resonance. Adapt pacing for different genres, including comedy, drama, and informational or educational content. Shape rhythm and momentum across entire scenes, not just individual cuts. Break continuity or pacing “rules” intentionally when emotional truth matters more than technical perfection. Apply principles inspired by theories such as Walter Murch’s Rule of 6, prioritizing emotion above all else. Who It's For Beginner to intermediate video editors who want more control over the emotional impact of their edits. Editors who don’t understand why their technically fine cuts feel emotionally inconsistent. Filmmakers and videographers cutting dialogue scenes or narrative work in any genre. Creatives who want to understand how pacing affects tension, comedy, and dramatic weight. Editors exploring how cutting on emotion can help their edits feel intentional, confident, and grounded. Wed, Apr 22, 7–8:30pm ET Live Online

This seminar is for CreativeLive subscribers only. Not subscribed? Start here! This advanced session compares a competition-ready traditional compositing workflow with a production-speed AI workflow using a complex composite. The class breaks the process into two parallel approaches, showing how the same scene can be built manually with full pixel control or accelerated using Generative Fill for realism. Walking through both workflows step by step allows students to see where traditional methods remain essential and where AI tools can dramatically reduce time without sacrificing visual credibility. This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with Karen Alsop. Please note this is Part 2 of Karen's "Compositing Workflows" series, though it can be taken individually. Part 1 is "Compositing: Transitioning From Manual to AI-Assisted Workflows." Create realistic contact shadows and grounding using manual brushwork and Levels-based shadow stacks. Re-light a subject manually by painting light and shadow with Curves and Dodge & Burn techniques. Add and integrate props and wardrobe elements using traditional masking and adjustment layers. Use Generative Fill and Harmonize to automatically calculate lighting and shadows for faster scene integration. Apply AI-based contextual re-lighting to wrap light naturally around edges and fur. Generate seamless props and clothing directly within the scene using targeted AI prompts. Compare when traditional workflows are mandatory and when AI-driven workflows are best suited for commercial speed. Who It's For Advanced Photoshop users working with complex photo composites. Getting Unstuck as a Photographer - Finding Inspiration in Your Backyard with Philip Ebiner

Wed, Apr 1, 7–8:30pm ET Live Online

This seminar is for CreativeLive subscribers only. Not subscribed? Start here! If you’ve ever felt stuck as a photographer, I want to start by saying this: it’s not because you’ve lost your creativity, and it’s definitely not because you’re not good enough. In my experience, feeling stuck usually comes from overwhelm… too many options, too much pressure, and not enough clarity about what to shoot when everything around you feels familiar. In this training, I’ll share what’s actually helped me get unstuck over the years, especially during seasons when photography started to feel heavy instead of fun. We’ll talk about why common advice like “just bring your camera everywhere” or “follow your favorite photographers” doesn’t work for most people, and how simplifying your process can make a huge difference. Things like shooting JPEG, using in-camera film recipes, and removing unnecessary steps can lower the barrier to picking up your camera again. We’ll also dive into practical ways to find inspiration close to home… trying new styles that actually fit your life, using prompts and challenges to give yourself direction, making photography playful again, and exploring nearby places you may be overlooking. My goal is for you to leave this session with a clear, realistic plan you can actually stick with, not a long list of things you “should” be doing. This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with Philip Ebiner. What You'll Learn Why photographers get stuck and why it’s usually not a talent or gear problem. Common things we try that don’t work. How simplifying your workflow can make photography feel lighter again. How to try something new without reinventing yourself as a photographer. Using prompts and challenges to eliminate decision fatigue. Making photography playful again with constraints and games. Finding inspiration close to home, even in places you think you’ve already “seen.” How to build a simple system so you don’t get stuck again. Who It's For You feel creatively stuck or uninspired. You want to shoot more but don’t know what to shoot. Photography has started to feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to editing and organizing. You love photography but miss the fun and curiosity you used to feel. You don’t want to buy new gear or wait for a big trip to feel inspired again. You want practical, realistic ways to stay consistent without burning out. How to Join This class is available exclusively to CreativeLive subscribers. Not a subscriber? Join here. The class will be delivered via Zoom-style live sessions through CreativeLive. To reserve your spot, register using the Sign Up form and button above. Space is limited. A unique Zoom join link will be sent to registered subscribers, up to the maximum number of participants per class. You’ll receive this link one hour before the class start time. The Invisible Edit: Making Cuts Feel Natural with Michael Venzor

Wed, Mar 25, 7–8:30pm ET Live Online

This seminar is for CreativeLive subscribers only. Not subscribed? Start here! This class explores why video editing is often called “the invisible art” and how great editors make cuts feel natural and seamless. Drawing on core editing theory, including ideas popularized by Walter Murch, the session focuses on why cuts work when they are motivated, timed, and visually coherent. Through clear examples of both effective and ineffective edits, students will learn practical techniques for hiding cuts so the audience stays immersed in the story instead of noticing the edit. This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with Michael Venzor. What You'll Learn Understand why video editing is considered “the invisible art” and how noticeable cuts can break immersion. Use motivated edits, such as eyeline matches and audio cues, to create a clear reason for every cut. Apply eye trace principles to keep the viewer’s focus in the same place before and after a cut. Hide cuts by cutting on motion and letting movement mask transitions between shots. Align cuts with rhythm, including music, dialogue cadence, or natural action, to create smoother pacing. Create visual continuity using match cuts that bridge time, space, or action. Avoid common editing mistakes by understanding rules such as the 180-degree rule, the 30-degree rule, and the use of L-cuts and J-cuts in dialogue scenes. Who It's For Beginner to intermediate video editors who want their cuts to feel smoother and more natural.
